This position falls under the classification Park Ranger 1.

What you will do:
As a Park Ranger 1, you will be on the front lines of park maintenance, resource stewardship, and customer service. Your responsibilities will include:
General Park Operations
  • Provide direction on work procedures and standards to individuals and teams to accomplish tasks and achieve goals
  • Make sure work sites, maintenance shops, yards, and storage areas are maintained, clean, and in safe condition
  • Enter and track maintenance and construction activity data electronically
Custodial Maintenance
  • Clean park facilities including restrooms, showers, maintenance shops, interpretive centers, etc.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked in restrooms, collect garbage and recycling, clean fireplaces, etc.
  • Replace burned-out light bulbs and reset circuit breakers in buildings and campsites
Visitor Services
  • Process online campsite reservations and register overnight campers
  • Accept and process payments for park services
  • Provide information about local attractions, park rules, and regulations to visitors
  • Train and oversee the work of seasonal employees, ensuring compliance with policies and
  • procedures related to campground operation and cash handling
  • Serve as the coordinator for campsite reservations and registrations and prepare reports
Additional Duties
  • Landscape maintenance
  • Building and facility maintenance and construction
  • Utility system maintenance and construction
  • Park patrol, safety, and rule enforcement
  • Resource interpretation and conservation

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
OR
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field; AND Six (6) months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.

  • Experience using a computer with software programs like (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, etc.) to enter data, registration of customers, fee collection, reconciling fees and completing deposits.
  • Skills and knowledge of basic park resources, facility and campground operations and maintenance, including use of tools, motorized equipment, mechanical repair, basic plumbing, carpentry, and providing resource interpretation.
  • Skill in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Skill in leading individuals or a small group in accomplishing basic tasks.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
